Nask Studio was entrusted with the revitalization of the visual identity of the Cinémathèque de Tanger, North Africa’s first art house cinema and film archive, founded by artist Yto Barrada. Housed within the historic Cinéma Rif building, the Cinémathèque is a space for memory, dialogue, and artistic exchange.
Our approach clarified this dual structure by developing a cohesive visual system that merges both identities, allowing the Cinémathèque to be clearly recognized within the globally renowned logo of Cinéma Rif. We created two custom typefaces: Rif Display, inspired by Tangier’s hand-painted signage tradition, and Cinémathèque, a functional font for clarity across applications.
Designed for risograph printing, the identity embraces low-tech aesthetics, limited colors, raw textures, reflecting both local production methods and the Cinémathèque’s accessible, independent spirit.
The result is a bilingual, adaptable system that balances Swiss design discipline with the vernacular energy of Tangier.
